[To the Editor W.D. Times.]

Sib,—lt is an oft-repeatcd saying, that a man who has to earn his living hns no spare time, whenhisday|s labor is done, for improving his garden and beautifying his cottago home. As showing what can be dono in this way, by a man who, t after his day's labors are o'er, indns- ; triously spends the spare time at his ; daDsal, in the cultivation of a neat cottage garden, that of Mr McGuire, : of Makorn, may be taken as an in- | stance. Hero we Unci n neat littlo cottage, surrounded by one of the best kopt and most prim-looking ' gardens in the town. The whole of the work has beon done at the hands of a man laboring daily away from home. Evory spare moment has been utilised in making it appear what it is; diggiiig, sowing, weediiig, and the numerous other details with which only those who do likewiso are conversant, A few years ago tho ground round the cottago was not in any way cultivated. Tho whole of the garden covers an area of two acres, A speciality has been mado of onion growing. Theso are grown in beds, the whole covering about an aero. They include a quantity of the White Lisbon, which last year were not obtainable anywhere in the Colouy. Another feature of tho gardens is tho numerous gooseberry bushes, some of which are loaded and bent to the ground with the weight of berries, One variety, grown on two-yeear-old slips, is of exceptional size, andrery prolific, Besides the articles mentioned the garden contains vegetables of every description and in abundance, some of which are preparing and others ready for household use. One portion of the garden never before in cultivation, has only been taken in hand since February last, and bids fair to be as productive as tho older portion. Over the cultivated portion of the gardou a weed can scarce be seen, so untiring and energetic bus tho owner been in making it one of the neatest and best-kept cottage gardens in the town, for which I think he deserves great credit. May many others follow his example.—l am, etc, Emehi'isisc
