THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

Another Creamery.

A meeting of settlers on the Opnki and round about Masterton met at ! Mr T. Thompson's Empire Hotel on Saturday evening to discuss the ad-. visability of starting a,creameiy 'in the vicinity of Masterton. " •. 'Mr L SjkesV whtf it? frill be remembered took (i prominent, part in starting-- the • Fernridee Greamory 1 was present by invitation and was voted to/the chaiiv.i .(;•') Mr Sykes explained at length how the Fernridge Creameiy bad been started, and the advantages of joining a-large- co-operative concern like the; N.Z, Dairy. Farmers' Union. It Vonld be-. necessary .to . appoint a committee to work the tiling up. Shares in tlio Company amounted to £2los, which was the limit ■of the liability; " The Fernridge farmors were' well • pleased with the:result of their joining the Union. During the last month lie personally had averaged 13 cows in milk, . .and; his cash return for milk supplied-to the creamery amounted to JSIWSs 4d. This wbuld give anidea oAhat the advantages were. Hiscdwajiai} been purchased at stock sales . and privately The milk of unhealthy cows was not received, and an officer of the Company could at any time inspect the cows owned by suppliers. The Company did not compel supporters to send in milk on Sundays, but were prepared to receive it. In reply to a question, Mr Sykos said that up to the present the only calls made on tho. Fernridge suppliers were the application and allotment fees nmonnting to. 10s per share,'

Jlr Colway moved that the ; N.Z. Dairy Farmers' Union be asked to establish a creamery in the locality of the Masterton Hospital, Mr J. McOoll seconded tlio motion, which was lost,

Mr T. D,' Thompson thought it would be desirable to first form a committee and after getting the names of probable shareholders and suppliers, and choosing a site, to call another meeting. He would move in this direction.

Mr Watson seconded and the raO' tion was carried, . -

Several of those present spoke in favor of fixing a site at the present meeting, ; Mr David Donald said two-thirds of the supply would come from beyond the Ruamahunga Bridge/ and the creamery should be in that direction, .

Mr W. Watson moved and Mr Jacques secoudcd that the previous resolution be rescinded, ana the site be the one offered by the Te Oro Ore estate for a creamory. , Tliis motion was put and declared carried, several present dissenting. Mr Sykes pointed put that aguaranteo of 250 cows was required. , Mr' Thompson, after some discussion, Baid tlioy did not seem to get on very well, and he thought it would be bettor to adjourn to get a more representative meeting, and therefore ho would propose that the meetinglio adjourned to adato to be fixed upon. Personally ho was propared tosupport the creamory, whatever site was chosen, but. he jwas only one, and the meeting did'not appear at all unanimous. Sq|eral settlers owning a considerable number of cows, were not represented at the present meeting, Tylio would probably support a creamory.

Mr IMiens seconded and the motion was, carried. :;,

On the motion of Mr W .Watson, seconded by Mr Jacques, tlirappeting was adjourned until Saturday .'next, at 7 o'clock,

'Several of those'present desirous of seeing a creamery started subscribed their names to a share list,: n# less than 63 shares, being ■ applied for und a guarantee of 174 - cowa beitig givon.
