Mr Hbnmon' has been instrumental in spreading about the town some very nasty rumours with reference to tho administration of the Gas Works, and wo expected that in his speech last oveniug he would have spoken out plainly from the platform till that ho has whispered in tho private ear of the burgess. But on the platform he only vaguely alluded to certain dishonesty which he specifically described off the platform. He is apparently privately slandering a fellow Councillor without daring to evon mention bis name on, a public platform. If the ratopaycis want a really first-class back-biter as Mayor, a Mr Facing-both-ways, who will say anything and stick to nothing, they can pick up such an article now dirt cheap.
