A souvenir ot the Wairarapa wreck came to Masterton in the shape of a cheque, which bore on one side the printed block of the Bank of New Zealand and on the other the imprint of the Bauk of Australasia. The sea-water had transferred an impression of a cheque of the latter Bank on to the back of a cheque of the former,- both cheques, of course, being in tho one envelope.
Perhaps the most curious fire insurance claim was that mado by a lady who considered herself entitled to the sum of half-a-guinea, the value of a plum-pud-ding and a saucepan that had been burnt in her kitchen, The accident had resulted from the omission of thos cook to put any water in the saucepan. Says tho lleviow of BeviowsNot a few signs seem to show that the wave of feeling in favor of prohibition, which was apparently sweeping oyer Now Zealand, is losing volume and force. The danger of recoil' is always tho chief peril in amoral reform of this character, but it will bo curious if the first Parliament which has been elected on women's suffrage should prove less resolute in temperance reform than a Houso elected by male voters only." ', Was tlio late Wellington Evening Press laid low by being in some way or other bought up and shut up by tho Wellington Evening Fast and the New Zealand Times P A paiupldctfrom Wellington entitled" the Mourning Press" hints at some such combination and for the honour of journalism it would be well for tho papers named to elear themselves from the implied charge. Further evidence was given yesterday in the Wellington Magistrate's Court iti'a case in which Edward Murdoch, a police constable, was sued for the sup. port of his illcjjntimato child. : The Stipendiary Magistrate decided that the story ot tho mother was .fully, corroborated by evidence, which, he admitted, was of a peculiar character, but which left no doubt in his mind. Burial at sea will, for some people, loso half its horrors if, as recent investigations _ tend to'show, it is truo that at certain depths decay is practically arrested, ana all the corpses which havo been committed to the deep waters, with, weights attached, are now standing on the bottom with their lineaments and ieaturcs as perfect as they were on the day whereon their comrades cast them over the ships side.
The convincing defence does not always save the eloquent criminal. It was tho fato of William Jones, a labourer (if twenty-six, to discover this at the Old Bailey. Charged with stealing sixpence half-penny from a West Ham confectioner's till,he cornered the prosecution by the following stiff cross-examination.
" New lookc ere. _ Weren't there both gold and silver in the till?" " Yes." Well if there, was both gold and silver in the till d'yw find I .ahould bo such a bloomin'juggins as to take 'coppers P" Unfortunately an officer had gasped tho man'? hapd as if came from the till with the copper yet in it,and there being previous convictions against him, bo got twelve months' hard labour, nearly a month per half penny. The Transit of Mercury, which occurred on Sunday morning last, .was only observed in Wellington by persons having good telescopes, the sun being obscured all the time, that is, from sunrise, by light Hcccjr clouds, which prevented the'-'transit being seen with smoked or coloured glass only, To those who had good teloscopos tho sight was'a most interesting one says tho Post.- It lasted from sunrise to about half-past 8 a.m. The next transit will not takp place till, November, IPO7. - ■>!; i TJio following information appears in Lloyd's List respecting tlie New Zealand Shipping .Company's steainef Otarama, which put ; back to' London, haying been in collision with the harqijo Nawirth' Castle off Dungpncss .on 30th SeptemberThp barquo .Njwprth Castle, from Bombay,; hound • for' Dim. kjrk, .while 'proceeding in tow, was struck on the port side by tho Otarima and all the top part of. that, sido was stove inwards. : ■&. second collisipkjtpok place aft staving in all tho top part of the deckhouse.;,,;Th6 chain and starrd fenclior disappeared, as yfollfls th'o bowsprit, • yard. "Ngawaewae," writing from tho Wairarapa undor dato 27th October to a Wellington paper, takes exception to a correctness of Mr Tregcar's ronorton tho Wairarapa unemployed. Mr'ircgear got as far as Mastcrton, and found no unemployed worth speaking about,as ho had then got into Mr Hogg's constituency, where the Government is very lavish (?) in its expenditure, and naturally concluded there could not possibly be any lack of employment. But it was a pity ho did uot enquire a little farther. On the day on which the correspondent wrote, travelling over 10 miles of road lie passed 17 swaggers. At the station where ho wrote there were soven, and since tho commencement of the month 73 men had there received a night's lodgings tea and breakfast. Mr Tregear could have found that on the North . Wairarapa stations there were a largo number of men who had been entirely supported through tho past winter by tho food and lodging whicli they had received from tho country settlors large and small. There has nevor been such a large number of mcu out of employment in the Wairarapa as there has boen during the past winter. Shearing is absorbing local men, but there is uot enough work to, absorb even for a short time the men travelling over the country. Though the Government tries to shut its eyes to the fact, there is now a large unemployed clement in the Wairarapa, which if not faced, will develop into far more serious proportions.
