A STRANGE STORY.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association]

Auckusd, Saturday, An old settler named William (J. Probert committed suicide by hanging himself on a willow tree behind his son's residence, Newton-road. Deceased was a widowor, and 75 years of age, He was a brother of the late John Probert, who left thousands of pounds to the Wesleyau Church. The following letter was rend at the inquest:—" My dear children, 1 hope you will not take it to heart or think any worse of me, as I have no desire to take bread out of your mouths. I brought you here without your consont, and I know that with tho families you have, you have not much, if any, to spare for one who is becoming a burden to himself, and I have no wish to become moro burdensome to others, either in sickness or old age. In tho New Wand Wesletjun Methodist of August 9th, 1800, it states that brother set a noble example, but I fail to see it in the same light as they. It is more like robbing the poor and the widow. My very small legacy of £lol' out of more than £20,000 is drawing to a close. What littlo is left will help to lay me with your poor mother. I have repeatedly applied to the benevolence of the Wesleyans for aid, but I cannot get aceut. Where does their so-called Christianity come in ? (Signed) W, C. Probert, Newton road,
