Wji learn from official sonrees that there aro large areas in the North and Middle Island where scarcely any prospecting has yet been done, and Mr Seddon recently advocated boiTowingthree-quartors of a million for tho Midland Railway, partly on the ground that it would open up a ! New Zealand Coolgariie. Now it is possiblo to find a Coolgardie in this colony, and at a time when syndicates here ure sending out considerable sums of money to Western Australia, it is worth while considering whether a local syndicate could not be formed to prospertthe Middle Island ranges. Three-quarters of a million would not be required, but a syndicate which could raise live thousand pounds for a well-organised prospecting party might pay well. It would not bo difficult to collect five thousand pounds in New Zealand for a speculative purpose of this kind, and of courso some help and co-op-eration would be obtained from the Government.
