CRICKET.

The cricket season in Masterton will bo opened to-morrow, when a scratch matchwill be pluycil by the members o£ the liewly-fgrmed Masterton Club. It is to be hoped a full muster of cricketers will turn out, so as to give the Selection Committee a fair idea of the merits of the players, in viow of the coining Association matches. Quite n numbers of new men have joined the Club, and with practice Mastcrton should make a bold bid for the championship

The arraugoments mado with the Park Trustees with reference to the use of tho Oval, havo met with the entiro approval of all the Clubs interested, and they should now combine in their efforts to mako the ground playable. It is probable that two pitches will be made, There is now no time to lose, and [players should bo on tlio ground every evening,

Three junior and one sonior teams will enter for tho championship matches of the Wairarapa Association, and the game will be more interesting in this district than for many years past. Strong junior elevens will bo placed in tho field Iby the Excelsior, W.P.CA., nml | Masterton Clubs, and the matches I with the Lower Valley teams will be looked forward to.

The new ground placed at the disposal of the Masterton Cricket Club at Lansdowne will probably not be played upon this soason, as it will tako some considerable time bofove it is in good working order. Next year, however, if it is looked after in tho interim, the new ground will prove a thorough boon to cricketers in Masterton,

The Mastorlon Park Trustees evidently look favorably upon the formation of the Wairarapa Crickot Aessociation, when they passed a resolution at tlioiv last meeting that 1 " only affiliated Clubs bo allowed to play on the Oval."

Tho following teams of tlio Excelsior Club will play in their opening match in tho Park noxt Friday afternoon (Carterton Show Day): Captain's Team: Harland, Hawko, H. Wriglcy, Richards, T, Wrigley, Walker, Worsfold, D'Arcy, Byford, It. Cameron, J. Henry, A. Williams, Wieo and Cashion, VicC'Captain'o team: W. Johnston, Baggc, Nicol, J. Wickens, Mason, T.
