Tho Judge in summing up in the Grassmere riot cases, said he was often surprised that freo labourers did not arm themselves to resist outrages. Without encouraging the use of fire arms, ho considered the men justified in using weapons if they had a reasonable idea that their lives were endangered. If freemen organised and armed themselves, there would bo fewer cowardly outrages perpetrated. Tho prisoners were convicted but sentence was deferred.
