THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
Evidently this year's election for Mayor of Mastertonwill be of greater interest thanusual. Although several weeks off the day of nomination active interest is being taken on behalf of probable candidates, Last evening, in response .to advertisement, some forty or fifty ratepayers favourable to Mr Homblow's candidature, assembled in tho auction ■ - mart to take steps to secure his return, Mr Homblow briefly referred to tho lines on -which ho would run the contest, He said - he was a firm believer in keeping pace with the advancement of the Borough, but at the present juncture - J deprecated any attempt to inllict heavier taxation on tho ratepayers. He specially referred to ,tho unsatisfactory state of the Gas Works from a financial standpoint, and contended that, until the Council could mako this remunerative it would bo folly to place heavier burdens on the people. Before many weeks several hundred pounds would have : to bo expended on urgent repairs at tho Gas Works, and for this reason alono he was justified in assisting to keep the rates-down He was personally in favour of a water and drainage scheme, but would not allow his privato feelings to outrun discretion. -When tho ratepayers and the Borough wore in a better financial position henould favourably consider that.proposal, but even then they should havo specially rated 'areas, so as only tlioso who reaped the benefit should contribute towards maintenance. Ho , referred at some longth to the dis> ifl graceful state of the town which he described discft.se, Eenall's proposal flush the creek a and trusted the Council .would effect to it this season/; \ • lii coming Hsi forward he did so at the request'-£j| ota number of ratepayers,' jv'Lo ;■• ; |o|ijf evidently were satisfied with'•his 5 actions in the past.
