Iu a series of clover political portraits, by "Phiz"in the Christckrch jPiw, lli' W, C. Buchanan, is dealt with as follows: This gentleman, a "Social Pest" of a bad description—that is, in Mr Buchanan's case, a man who has done more for his country ,in one year than those who revile the thrifty, : energetic and successful, simply because they are successful, do in their whole mean livespursues the even tenor of his way, and continues to Bmile grimly superior to the slings and arrows of the mannikins who attack him. Oratory is not his' forte, and he makes no pretence about that either, or about anything else.
