FOOTBALL.

[By Damocles,]

Greytown ut. Red Stars, i

;■ We have had our full share of football surprises in tho Wairarapa this season, and the game of last Saturday between the above teams was no exception to the rule. After the brilliant display of the Stars on a wet ground against Carterton 0111 tho previous Saturday, the decisive victory of Groytown—fourteen points to nil -was hard to believe, and Masterton people would not accept the statement as true until the vanquished ones arrived home'. The boatiug seemed to have little effect upon the players when they arrived iu town, for'from the amount of lung power they displayed one would have thought they. had come off victorious. The men freely acknow: ledged that the best team won, and the result would not have been altered had the full strength of the team been present.

Tho afternoon turned out ox-, tremely miserable, a drizzling falling throughout, making the ground slippery, and against any exposition of the Stars favorite game, A high wind was also blowing across the field, making passing with any correctness almost a matter of impossibility. Greytown mode the game a forward ono, and in this division completely over-ran their smaller opponents. Tho only score in the first spell was a splendid goal kicked from a mark near the half-way flag by Dockery, who made quite a name for him-' self as a place-kicker by his splendid attempts from difficult angles, and with a groasy ball, In the second spell, Leach and D, Udy secured tries from forward rushes, both of which;.were converted, one by Dockery and the other by Hawke, making fourteen points in all, Greytown had the best of the game nearly all through, tho defensive play of the. Star backs being continually called into requisition, The Star forwards made a great mistake in not heeling, the ball out more to Hansen as their only chance in making a stand was to give their backs an opportunity to show their turn of speed. As it was, the ball was kept among the forwards, and tho heavy weight of Greytown carried everything before them, This win places Greytown in the lead for the banner, and Masterton will have to beat them twice if the championship is to be kept at this end of the valley,

Mr Chas Pratt officiated as referee, and although the feeling of the spectators was against him, he was' aoknowleged by the players to be absolutely .fair'and■impartial. Messrs Brunton and Fellinghum j acted as" line umpires.

Red Star 2nd ut. Featherston,

Tho Junior Cup Match between the abovo teams took place on the Masterton Park Oval bpforo a,' largo crowd of spectators onSaturday last, The ground was in a very slippery state, and militated ngaiustany very brilliant play, but notwithstanding', the game was one well worth watching, some splendid individual play at various times being witnessed, The Featherstouians arrived on the ground with a full muster of thoir men, and in appearanco wero much heavier than their opponents, The Stars were playing substitutes for Broad and Thompson, who journeyed to Greytown with tho senior team. The first spell waß rather slow, and the only snoro made was by Richards, who ran in at tho corner flag. The gamo livened up considerably during tho second half, and most ■of tho spectators considered that. Featherston could win with the wind at their backs, but results proved otherwise for the superior combined play of the Stars was too good for the visitors, and they were rewarded by Jeffries crossing the line after a good ran from a pass by Butement, which, although at an easy angle, was not converted. This was all tho scoring thet was done, tho game ending iu a win for the Stars by 6 points to nil, Mr 0, Reid, of Carterton, acted as referee.

An interesting match will be played on the Oval on Thursday afternoon next, when the Orientals will try conclusions with tho Junior champions—the second Stars. It will beremembored that on the last; occasion tho yellow and blacks drew with tho Stars, and it is to bo hoped they willmake matters ns equal on Thursday.

Featherston were known to be strongly represented, and came up fqlly confident of a victory, Tho. Sfare are now tho champion junior team % the Bdasoni and serve, that honor by the amount of pluck and endurance they have displayed in all their matches.
