MASTERTON LICENSING BENCH.

Quarterly Meeting. The quarterly meeting of the Mastorton Licensing Committee was held this day at noon. Present: Mossrs T. Hutchison, S.M. (chairman), T. E, Chamberlain, C. E. Danicll, J, Hesse)', A, Walker, and F. A, Sheath, The report of the Inspectors for Masterton, Ekctahuna, Paliiatua and Temti wore read. The Masterton report stated that the hotels were fairly well conducted, and there had been a diminution 111 tlio drink traffic. ' A letter was read from Mrs Lowe of the Star Hotel, stating that she had been unable to sell out, and could not do so except at a loss. Slio asked for a further extension of three months. The application was granted on account of the favourable police report. Sergt. McArdlo stated on oath that objectionable characters, probably unknown to tho proprietor of the Club Hotel, frequented that house. Ho had seen them in the house and about it. He had warned tho proprietor and manager that such characters were about. The Chairman : "Then perhaps you are too easy Sergeant. You must keep us clear of these people." Tho Sergeant, continuing, said there had, within the past three months, been it number of petty larcenies, and one 011 Saturday lastthat had not been reported to the police. Continuing his evidence tho Sergeant said that their were several drunken men coming from the Royal Hotel on Sunday. He saw them coming from the door of tho house. Oil this ground lie had stated that the general conduct of tho house was not so good for the past three months. The Star Hotel hud been very well conducted during the past three months. OAIJAXGA FURRY. A letter of complaint was read from Mr Handyside stating that he was attacked by a man in a state of intoxication, who ho considered had been supplied by Mr McCullogh. MrPownall appeared for Mr McCullough and said that his client had come ft great distance to answer the charge. He protested against a report of this kind being received in this way, If the Committee ad]ounied the hearing of tin's charge it meant that his client would have to como again 65 miles to answer it. Bobt. McCullough, sworn, staled there was 110 truth in the complaint that he had supplied the man with liquor when he was intoxicated. The' man, when sober, stated that the irst time he met Mr Handyside lie ivould speak his mind to him. He bad said this before ho had a drink of my kind, cr.osixo noun.
