SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

Mr Eli Smith-Badly Injured,

Mr Eli Smith, J.P., a well-known settler at Tawataia, and tho representative of the Alfredtou District in the Wairarapa North County Council, met with' a serious accident while working on his property yesterday. From what we can learn he was engaged in blasting logs, and wasusing a fuse made by himself, which unfortunately proved too quick, and before he could get a safe distance away, a charge exploded, driving a piece of timber against Mr Smith's chest with such violence as to lay it open, and indict other injuries to his arm, When found his leg was also badly broken, and his face burnt with powder. Tho unfortunate man was conveyed to Eketatunaas soon as possiblo, and admitted to the Masterton Hospital yesterday after-1 noon.
