Ordinary Ming. _ The ordinary meeting of the M auricoville Hoad Board was held on Sa ,urdny t the 20th inst. Present, Messrs C, Forsberg (Chairman), I'. Glceson, K. Tail, aud J. Bannister, I The minutes of the previous liceting wero read and confirmed. • I Correspondence was read from Commissioner of Crown Lands staling, in reply to request for information regarding tho closing of a road, that such can only be effected under the provisions of the Land Act, 1892, when all the parties concerned concur: where thosointerostcd are uot unanimous, resort must be made to tho Public Works Act. •From tho Mayor of Linwood, enclosing, " Proposal solution of the unemployed difficulty." - Consideration of this was deferred.
Irom tho Umier Secretary for Lands, with reference to vesting a rcscrvo in Hastwcll, - Die Clerk was instructed to state iu reply that the Board is willing to accept the trusteeship. From Mr M. Kennedy, directing the attention of the Board to (lie question of varying the valuation of tho properties for special rate inconiicction with loans. —The Board partly agrees with Mr Kennedy's views, but contends that tho Act confers no power to revise theyalulation upon which a special rate Jias been originally stuck,as tho Act seems to bo differently interpreted by Local Bodies, The Clerk wasiuslructcdto communicate with the Government on the subject with a view either to an authoritative nltcranco defining more explicitly the powers of Local Bodies with respect to the levying of special rates, or an amendment of tile Act being made. A petition was received from a number of ratepayers on Mangamalioc road, requesting that a loan of £I2OO be raised for forming this road. Tho members of the Board wero unanimously of opinion that, certain sections proposed_ by tho petitioners to bo embraced within the special rating area should be excluded therefrom, aud unless the petitioners consent to this being done, iio action will bo taken by the Board in the matter. The road is already formed through aud beyond tho properties which the Board suggests should be omitted, and the " thirds" which have accrued from thosefor many years, have been spoilt on the portion already formed, and tho Board therefore considers that it would be unjust to levy a special late on those sections for tho extension of the roads.
Mr Augns McLood interviewed the Board with roforcnco to road access lo his property. It was resolved before doing anything iii this matter to ascertain •whether the road shown on the plan as crossing sections 72,7' i, and 7o is legal. The Clerk was instructed to convey the thanks of tho Board to Mr Hogg, the member for the district, for the prompt and valuable assistauce rendered by him to the'deputation that lately waited on the Minister of Lands.
