Thursday.

Tho recent cold weather has caused much mortality among sheep in tho Lower Valley, Passing along tho road between Greytown and Feathci-ston quite a number of dead carcases are to bp seon. Warm weather will be welcomed.

Great preparationsnro being made here for tho Hunt Club ovont which lakes place this evening.' A largo numuoi' of small fry (boys averaging from ten to fifteen years) have commenced the practice of playing games along the street here of a night, much to the annoyance of residents. Perhaps our constablo will put a stop to it. It is a nuisance and dangerous to horsemen. If boys want exercise this cold weather thoy should confine themselves to tho open fields.

The Debating Society hero have certainly bit upon ut bad meeting night, for the meetings have been postponed several times now in consequence of other events clashing on the same night. That beautiful species of native bird (the tni) appear to be very fond of the bluo gum trees, and this season they are more numerous than usual. The recent ball hold iu connection with the Ifyatherston Oddfellows' was a very successful affair, fully 90 couples being present. A pleasing presentation was mado to Mr Mitchell Tate, the late Secretary. After fill expenses were paid, the handsome sum of £ll odd was handed to the good of the order.
