FIRE AT WAINGAWA.
Incendiarism Suspk'eted.* The Masterton firebellsrang out a vigorous alarm last evening about half-past eight, and from the glare in tho southern sky it appeared that v firo was raging near Kuripuni, It turned out, however, to bo on tho ether side of the Wuingawa, 'at
ssrs Williams and Beetham's property, ono of the large cottages near the old boiling-down works boing destroyed. l'Vom what we can leam there is every reason to suspect incendiarism, and the police have the matter in hand.
Some time ago Mrßeetham granted permission to Mr John Webb for a few unemployedmen to temporarily lodge in the cottages, bnt instead of moving on in a fow days, the numbers increased rapidly and the party appeared to be making themselves very comfortable, and to havo settled down for the winter,
Naturally tho owners of the property objected, and last week we hear that 25 men, after thoy had been givon due notice to seek fresh quarters, we're turned out and tho bunks destroyed and windows removed to prevent the cottages being again used. The fire of last night is supposed to be an act of revenue on the part of some of tho men.
