Japanese Attack on a Chinese Port,
London, August 11,
Sir Edward Grey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Foreign Office, has informed Japan that England holds her responsible for any loss of British life or property through the sinking of the Kow Shing. Some 14,000 Japanese troops have been landed at Fusan, on the east coast of Corca, and 8000 at Gen Sau. They are marching on Seoul, the capital, to meet tho Chinese, who are advancing south, It ia expected that China will have massed 60,000 men by the end of September. China controls the northern telegraph linos in Corea, and Japan thoso in tho south. Both refuse to allow warmessages to bo transmitted, Twentyono Japanese warships attacked the naval station and arsenal at Weihaiwci, a harbour on tho Chinese coast of the Yellow Sea during the absence of tho fleet, but the batteries on land at Lui Kung repulsed them. A second attack by tho Japaneso on the naval station and arsenal failed, ns did an attack at Fort Arthur.
Large orders for flour aud provisions have been sent to New York by China.
