Mr Montgomery has been expresskeen regret at the destruction of the bush on the Himutakas. The Minister for Labour commented on an aside by the member for Clutlia yesterday. " The lion, gentleman's cars arc too long," was the member's retort, " That is 11 piece of insolence," rejoined the Minister. The member said it was not insolence, but (lie Speaker said it was covert insolence, Mr Mackenzie said if the lion, gentleman assured him that bis ears were not too long he would withdraw the remark.— Poll. >
The Gaming Bill of Sir J{' Stout was discussed in Committee last night. An amendment abolishing (he totalisator was lost by 32 votes to 24. The clause limiting the issue of totalisator licenses was amended so as to provide that the number issued shall not exceed two-thirds of the number allowed in the racing year 1892-93. The Colonial Secretary is to decide how the reduction shall be effected. The debate on the second reading of the Institute of Journalists Hill was adjourned, The Bill abolishing special juries was read a second time in the Legislative Council.—N.Z. Timet.
