(From Our Own Correspondent) Wednesday,
We havo experienced since Sunday an almost continuous dowi-pour of rain. Asa consequence, all the rivers in the district on Tuesday afternoon were in a high state of floods, and all the low lying lands underwater. Heavy slips are reported in all directions.
Communication between here and I Pahierston is interrupted through slips in the Gorge, and no mails mlived from Wellington. We ht.ve b?.on also cut off from Masterton by slips beyond EkoUnnia. Tho rains, although heavy, have been of a very mild character, .and the growth of vegetation and pasture has been most unusual for this sen-son of tho year, A nnraberof tenders werereceived by the P.ahiatuaßo'.oi'gh Council on •Monday evening for 'ho Mange!vainpko river diveision and protective works; but nqiio were accepted, the Council agreeing to adjourn the matter "Son a week far conudeiation. I think Counc'llers weie rather discouraged at the targe amounts tenderers wanted for this work.
