Market Report
Messrs A. G. Taineund Co report on the markets for the week endinc May 24th:—Fatsheep -The market steadily hardening very few prime wethers coming forwards, mostly light butchers sheep, with a good demand for all offering, Sales have been made at quotations, 12s Gd for good heavy wethers and Us 9d for good meaty sortii, ewes 9s to 9s Gd for good weights, but as the season advances buyers of f atewesgetshyer. Sales have been made at up to9s9d, lighter weights 7s9tl to 8s Gd. Store sheep—The demand is restricted to good lines of very fresh wethers fit for topping off with turnips, which this year arc in most districts almost a failure, and this we think will help to harden the prices of mutton considerably as the season advances. Lambs are in good demand and all lots of good soi'tn.in good condition sell readily. Values remain unaltered Gs to Gs 6c\ for good sorts and 5s to os 6d for inferior, culls very hard to place at prices very unremimeralive to growers. Young owes in lamb are in fair demand. We have ho sales to report and quote up to9sas value. P.M. ewes in lamb good conditioned sorts are bringing 6s to 7s, At these prices business can be done. I Fat cattle wo quote at 18s Gdper 1001b, and a good demand for prime bullocks. Store cattle •' Business for 'the season is almost over, except for dairy cows and heifers, which are selling: good young milkers, close to calving, £7 to £B, but they must be good at these prices; heifers we have sold for M 10s to £h 15s, and some to calve in the spring, £3 15s to £4; weauers, 22s to 245; demand slackening. Pigs arc very much easier; good porkers, 25s to 32s 6d; and baconers, 40s to 50s according to Weight. Sheepskins are ingood demand and sell readily at full market'rates at our weekly sale. Good butcher skinß worth 3s, rough sorts 2s 6dj dry country skins up to 2s 6d; pelts Is 6d, Is Bd, Is lOd; inferior pelts, 6d to Is Id; dry skins 3fdto4£d per lb, Hides: Good bullocks, 12s 6d to 15s; cows, 7s 6d to 9s. Tallow and fat; Good demand at quotations, Good rendered tallow, 17s 6d to 19s; medium to: good, 15 S to 16s; best caul fat, 12s 6d to 15s. Babbit skins are now coming forward moro freely: Autumn '3d to 7d per pound; summer, sd; winter-skins will meet with good demand at much higher rates; any quantity can be taken, Fuy.:— quotations nominal, mills are closing up, prices in London will not pay.
