DROWNING FATALITY.
(By Telegraph.—Preßß Association), Auckland, Thursday, Late last night, James Gross, carpenter's yeoman, of H.M.S, Orlando, was drowned at the man-of-war steps, Queen Street wharf. Bo oame down with other liberty men to meet the boat, and tumbled in between the steps railing and the wharf. A marine jumped in in the darkness and states that the drowning man caught hold of his Ug,' but suddenly relaxed his hold and sank, Ho Was unable to recover the body. It is believed that Oross struck the stringers of (he wharf in falling, and Was stunned.
