TENUI NOTES.

(From Out Own Correspondent,) A football match was played on Saturday l.|, in Maunsell's paddock, between Tenui and Hast Coast. Although the-weather has teen very dry the turf was in splendid condition, being very springy. A good number of spectators witnessed it, and much interest was taken in the gamo, Both teams were well represented, and a most exciting and even game was played. Roughness was conspicuous by its absence, and the game, though at timos very faßt, was played in great friendliness. Considering it was the first good match this season played by either team very fair form was shown. The East Coast kicked off, with the sun in their faces, the Tenui team playing down hill. The ball was kicked well up into the Tonui quarters, but was soon worked down to tbo visitors' goal, The Johnstons played a hard game, and kicked well, but the Tenui backs were on the alert, and bnekieg up their forwards well, Jimnuk Owen succeeded in getting thjfball, which was kicked by that old player, Alox. Stuart, who got behind the line. Skeet took the kick, and converted it into a goal. The visitors then rushed the ball into the home quarter and looked like scoring several times, Their repeated efforts roused the Tenui men, and soon the ball was travelling' rapidly from ono twenty- 1 five to the other. The running and tackling of the Johnstons, Stuart, J,

Owon, Brookes and Gorman being very fine, At half time the score Stood Tomii five points, East Ooaat nil, When play was resumed the East Const rushed tbe bull into tbo home quarters, but Doylo neutralised by long and judicious kicking. Again and again did both teams try to get bohind each other's line, but to no purpose. Tbe ball was kept loose, and often Greig, W. flarvoy, and MoLeniian lead tbo attack on tbo homo team's line of defence, and as often did A. Speedy, Deane, Brooks, Bolt, J. Owen, andE. Nicholla neutralise. Two or three times it looked as if Tenui would score by tho aid ot Jimmy Owen, who is a plucky runner aud dodger, but either Stuart or one of the Johnstons grassed liim. Once he jumped clean over Stuart's head, as that back tried to stiji him, and would have got in bad not.f. Johnstou collared him. Just before "noside" was called the East Coast had tbe homo team penned in near their goal lino, anil would have scored had their backs been properly fed. Several wild passes wore given tbo Johnstons and W. Speedy. Following were the teams:—East Coast.- Johnston (2), A. Stuart, Tully, Stansfield, Greig, McLennan, Gorman, Smith (2), Stickles.Olpheit, Dully, W. Harvoy and W. Speedy. 'lVnui.-A. Speedy, Owen (2), Skeet, Oliver, J, Smith, J. Diane, Wilson, Cameron (2), Doyle, Brookes, E. Nicholls, Byrno and Bolt, Alec Stuart has not lost any of his old form, and played a rattling game, bis kicking and tackling being very good. G, Johnston played splendily and most unselfishly, Ho and his cousin, F, Johnston, should bo able to give a good account of themselves this seasou, especially if tbe latter would pass as well us the former, W. Harvey, an old rep., was always on the ball, and set bis youngjr comrades a good example Paddy Gorman is a bard worker, McLennan, W, Speedy, Stansfield, and Greig worked well. Jimmy Owen is tbe mainstay of his team. His kicking, running and tackling being very good, It was a treat to see him jump clean over Stuart, and to see the latter's look of surprise when the wily Jimmy bad disappeared. A. Speedy, Brookes, J. Deane, A. and 3. Cameron, and Byrno did usfful work, and were always on tbo ball, Ernest Nicholls played with cool judgment, and did some good work by bis judicious kicking Doyle has improved on bis old form and should be played again, He kicked well and collared well. J, Smith is ut bullocky forward, and should do well. He is uew to the game, and if he would only go more into tbo scrums he would bo of great service to his team.

The East Cuast meet Annadnle and Manawa in two week's time. A mulch is being arranged with the Tradesmen, who owe Tenui a visit for Quoeu's Birthday. The Ea&t Coast mett Tenui again on on early date,

Muti' sympathy is sho'-vn towards Mrs rk'wart, widow of the unfortu • nate man, who was accidentally shot, She is left w'th three young children.
