A JOCKEY IN THE WITNESSBOX.
Tbe following is an extract from the turf libel oase, Hayes v. tbe AuiImlmian, whioh oaused some sensation a week or two ago. Hayes, the jockey who was accused of" pulling" and other mal-praotices is in the witness-box :
Mr Purves: Your earnings you have told us were £5,000 in three years, flow much'is that a year? —Witness: Ido not know. Cannot you divide £5,000 by 8 ?- I never tried those hig figures, Well, divide ±'6,000 by 8. How much iB that ?—£B,ooo.—(Laughter) Are yon quite sure ?-l}o, lam not. • Mr Duffy was indignant at you being called an illiterate boy. Now, you take that book and by to divide it 1 —I do not understand these big figures, Well, I will make them small for you. Divido 5a by 3 ?—(After a long pauße)—l oannot do that.—(Laughler). Where were you educated ?—At the Christian Brothers' School, St. Kildi. I suppose you were not there very long ?-ob, yes, 1 was, About six years.
And yet you cannot diviUe 5a by 3 ? —I forgot these sums now. What is your ago ?—Eighteen years.
And the rest ? - Eighteen year and a few days.
