Fatal Fire at Christchurch.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association). Csßisiommoii, Friday, Shortly after midnight a fire broke out in a seven roomed two storey building, occupied by W. Strong, librarian of the publio library. The inmates consisted of Strong, his wife, seyou children, aud a servant. The ohildren were rescued by being thrown out of the upstairs windows into the arms of the police. After the fire had ken burning some time it was discovered that a hoy nine years of age was missing. He was sleeping in the southern side of the building and had been forgotten. The brigade turned their attention to this.side of the house and succeeded in subduing the flames sufficiently for a search of the room to bo made. The unfortunate lad was found lying in a corner, dead, and badly burned. He had evidently mado an attempt to escape and had been suffocated. The Brigade j had great difficulty in saving the publio library, which was only ten feet away from the house.' Mr dtrong'a furniture and effects wero insured in the Victoria office for £3OO, The building was the property of the Board of Governors ol the Canterbury College.
