At tli4 Miißtei'ton Court this morning before lihwt 11. E. Eton and !, E. Price, J.P.'s, ut man named Juim Cunning alius John Campbell was charg'd with stoaliug a bag containinj> albert chains, rings, scissors, siik handkerchiefs, oic, valued at £l9, from the Martinboroiiffk Hotel, on the 19th instant, the property of Antonio Fidsl, a hawker, Sergeant McArdle said the accused had been arrested on Saturday with some of tlio stolen property on him,

Antonio Fednl deposed that he was stopping at tbe Murtiuborougli Hotel on the lt):h inslunt,aml a bag belonging to him was stolen. He valued the contents at about £l9, Saw the I accused ut the hotel Left ibo hand bag in a sitting loom, and on his return from supper fuued the bag gone, Identified the bag and property produced in court as his own, Cross examined by accused -There rao throe mon in the room besides the accused at tbe tjme of witness going into supper. By the Sergeant: These tbrce men came into supper but accused remained behind, When ho camo bad after supper tbe accused and property hud both gone.

T, C. Kayner, manager of the Royal Hoiel, gave evidence that ho saw accused on Friday \H, who asked him if he (the witness) could give him a pint of beer for a pair of scissors. Witness declined but offered to purchase them, before doing so he aeked him where fio got them from. Accused said ho got thcru ia Greytown, Witness bought them and identified them with those, produced in Court. By the Court; Ho gave sixpence for the scissors, tbo price asked by the accused, Did not think they were stolen.

Constable Bowdcn said on 7 p.m. on the 10th inst. the informant reported that some one had stolen a hand-bag, the contents of which were wonb £25. Tlio report produced contained full particulars, foina of the property had been recovered,

Sergeant McArdlo said from information received from Martinborongh he arrested the accused in Queeu-st., on 21st inst, When charged with the offence ho denied it and said ho had just come from Pahiatua, Un being searched two pipes and a purse produced were found on liini, also a necktie which lie was wearing. Accused stuted that a man whom he did not know stule the bag and gave it to him. This completed the evidence and the accused was committed for trial.
