WAITEMATA ELECTION.
Defeat of the Government 1 Candidate. (By Telegraph.—Press Association). Auckland, April 9. The Waitemata election took place to-day. More than half the returns' are in, and Mr Massey's present majority is 200, At Albertlaiid be receivod a majority of over 100 votes. Later. Mr Massey's present majority is 226.
Latest Auckland, Tuesday. Further returns from four booths increase Massey's majority to 258. [Mr Massoy, who has beaten Mr Jackson Palmer the Gorenment candidate, was born in Ireland, in 1856, and received his education there, coming out to New Zealand tojoiu his relatives in 1871. Ho afterwards proceeded to tho South Island, whero he spent about five years, but went back to Auckland about fifteen years ago, and settled down at Mangero, where ho has resided cvor since, farming about 800 acres. Since coming to Mangare lie has taken a considerable amount of interest in publio affairs. For tho last three years he has been president of the Auckland Agricultural Association, one of the most suocesslul, influential, and useful farmer's societies in the North Island, if not in the Colony. Coming to political matters, ho has been Vice president of the National Association for the last two yoars, At the genoral election ho contested the Franklin 6eat'agaiust Major Harriß, and was only defeated by 89 votes.]
