CORRESPONDENCE.
A Whitewashing Establishment."
[to the editor, w.d. Sir,-During ihe aitiing of the Janbriiptoy Opar£ last week, a remark m made by Hia Hdnor Judge Eettlii 0 the effeot" that t.hfo oourtia not a whitewashing establishment; but a iourt6f equity. 1 " Now, Sir, I fail o gee where the " equity" comes ia. fhfl first portion of His Honor's re> msiks were no doubt appliiwhle to the, poorer class of bankrupts viz,. ing msa who had perhaps large fumilina: to support, and through sheet misfortune, failed for oomparatively imall amounts. There whs one case in ptftioular where the term " whitewash" could be properly applied, unfortunately, there were no creditors present to oppose the discharge, although several had attended, and remained in the vicinity of;the Court Houße, on Friday during the base of 0. Pederaen v. Johunoe Jessen, .waiting for the bankruptcy business [to commence. Th«y were informed 'that the oase wonld probably occupy the court until late in the evening, and were thus unprepared for any bankruptcy ca«es until the following day. In answer to a remark made by the D.0.A., His Honor intimated that be would proceed with the case, If there were no creditors present to offer any opposition it was their fault. An oppor'nnity was thus offered to His Honour to put into tffeot the last portion of his remark*; the bankrupt was practically in his hands to lie dealt with in a just, fair, and impartial manner, not only to himself, but to the oreditora who were absent, In conclusion I would like to ask yon, and the readers of your paper, where the suitableness is, in allowing a manioeet his disobaige on paying six shillings in the J>. who can earn a guinea with a few scraloheß of his pen; while a poor laboier, whom it would take a week to earn»similar amount, must receive ft thorough " dressing down," and be ordered to pay at least ten shillings in the pound, lam, etc., A Creditob, April 2nd, 1894,
