CATHOLIC SOCIAL.
Contort and Dance. Yesterday evening at tlie Drill Ball, Masterton, a very successful social was given in connection with the Catholic Church. The hall was tastefully decorated with evergreens and flags, and conspicuous among the latter was an Irish harp and shamrocks on an emerald green background, The attendance was large and the Rev. Either MeKenna was busy welcoming many friends and acquaintances with kindly greeting. The first part of the programme consisted of a concert after which the floor was cleared for dancing, and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy the evening'B entertainment, The overture' was followed by " The Death of Nelson" sun/i by Mr Nicholls, and Mr T. Gray gave the same piece as a trombone solo—a difficult performance creditably done, MissE. Gallagher received a hearty round of applause fur " Bemember Me No More." Mrs Element's singing in "Maid of Athens" was a great treat, and as an encore she kindly gave a song from "lolanthe." Unfortunately, the enjoyment of these two ? songa was somewhat marred by the noisy chorus of a screaming infant and the accompaniment of terrific blasts of wind which almost threatened to. remove the roof. Mr J, Sitrms, who seems as great a favourite in the concert room as bin brother, sang " Mona" with muoh feeling. " Killarnoy," was prettily eung py Miss Pender, of Wellington, and to judge from the rapturous applause. this lady touched many an Irish heart with the well known melody, An oncore was demanded and was followed by a pianoforte solo. " The Biter Bit" by Miss Gallagher brought the first/ part of the programme to a clou.-. The Kev, Father Medina, briefly addresied those present, thanking them for their attendance and explaining the Blight change in the programme necessitated by " circumstances beyond his control," Miss Fender kindly came to the rescue and gave another nODg in place of the item on tlioprogramme which was omitted, The benches were quickly put aside and the dancing began, The 'refreshment booth was well patronised and the gathering did not up itill a late hour, Excellent music was provided by Messrs Kearsley 1 (piano), and Minifie (cornet), '
