A PRETTY CONCEIT.
Tho enormous sales ot the Waterbury havo led firms who do not caro for a steady turnover at a legitimate profit to explore tho purlieus o! the Continent for oheap inferior " tickers wo do not call them watoheswitli which to 'run tho Waterbury. 1 Theso possess one virtue only—that ol showing the dealer a return of some 150 per cent, en his outlay. That they should keep timo is a matter o( no momont, so long as thoy resoinblo tho Waterbury in outward appearance, style of casing, etc., with sufficient closeness to deceive a careless or unwary purchaser. Firms doing this often say to us " What do wo care; we can mr.ko five shillings a watch, more on thorn then we can on yours; and as to keeping timo, well, our troubles abojt that." Buyers requiring reliablo watches can trust tho Waterbury, and tho public requiring the correct time should see that thoy get it. Tho gents'or ladies' Waterbury, gold filled or in sterling silver, are handsome, inexpenßivo, and durable; whilst the nickel varieties aro so woll known that thoy require no further recommendation. It is a pretty conceit for here and thero a stray trader to think his imports of tho " Nobuohadnezznr," the " Millenium," tho " Gonbung," or some other specially titled monstrosity, has any effect on the Waterbury market, whilst for ( every watch he nervously orders ovor ono 'hundred Waterburys are alway] afloat for New Zealand. Tbo veal strength of the Waterbury lies in its absolute reliability, in other words its absoluto refusal to keep anything but tho correct time, We somotimes see" tickers"-wo still bar them any other title—offered for Bale which aro really wonderful combinations. They not only exhibit the whoio of the celestial bodies ou their facts, but keep time, or profess to,tell you tho state of the money market, the amount of any particulal member's indebedness at Bellamy's, and the name of the next Bank to reconstruct in Australia. The Waterbury does not do this. It simply keeps correct time and goes on doing so.
