FIRE AT CARTFRTON.

Estimated loss £2,000.
Additional particulars of the fire at Mr W. Booth's sawmill, show that MrGroube, an employe who lives near the mill, wbb the first to discover the fire and give the alarm. The (ire had, however, obtained'such ahold that nothing could be done, except }n iho direction of preventing the ijre spreading to the old mill and other buildings plose by. Water ivas plentiful and tho Carterton Fire Brigade worked well, arid by four o'clock on Saturday prning had the firo well under control,
The damage done by the firo is estimated ns close'upon £2OOO, while there was no insurance upon either the buildingß or the machinery, the latter hing particularly valuable. A number of trucks were demolished j and tho travelling benches, belting, and milling paraphernalia of.all kinds totally destroyed,
It is understood that Mr Booth intends starting operations in the mill buildings that were saved, as Boon as possible, and the mill-hands will therefore not belong out of employment.
