TENUI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent). | Ido not want to advertise Elder's or anyone else's land, but one cnnnot help wondering why such magnificent flat country as is seen at the back of Elder's is uot settled on as a townsbip. It is splendidly adapted for suoh, being very open, fertilp, wcll*atered, and adjoining a large Government block, which is well timbered. The country is also near the si-a, and settlers could send their produce to Wellington more readily tlidtti via Mast<rlon. There is an excellent roud, suitable for vehicular traffic. If the owner or owners of | the lund oould see ibeir way clear to cut it up into 100 or 200 acre blocks it would induce settlement and promote 'prosperity in a district, which ni present is uono too far advanced. Messrs Elder have cut up eorue of their run, and those who have purohdaed hi-o doing

We are suoh a peaceful community that the Government hove left us without a J.P. The only one, Mr Taylor, in this large dislriot is ill in" Master lon Hospital. Now is the time for aspirants to that high (?) public office to he on the gut. we for an appointment. It costs nothing, [oanie one, come'all 1 .

Sometime ago a good sum of money was handed to the Public Hall Trustees, being the proceeds of the Sewing Bee, to be expended in effecting sundry repairs to that building, but, as yet, nothing has been' done, Plenty/of time, though, as the roads are too dry. When the oash was handed over the roads were too muddy, 1 If we wait until the winter they-will be nice and greasy and facilitate haulage of the timber.

The; "mud slope" from the Post Office to the hotel is to be metalled, but when, goodness knows, It was metalled last year with dry mud as a substitute for rook, mid whenever it rains the road churns into mud again a foot or two deep. All in good time, slow and Bure se?ms-tobo : therule, but more suteness coupled with swiftness would be better. "Billy Bray " used to say (bat if God meant men to smoke he would have made them with chimneye on their heads, VYe have hadalotof stnoki—not tobacco smoke —in this district, which has been far froai pleasant. ■■ •

The Whareama .6:0. met a toam from Masterton last week and bid well for the game. The game was a most enjoyable one, Johnson surprised us by his all round hard bitting, and Hansen bowled well for his side, Whatman is unquestionably the hardest hitter of loose bowling in the district, and is a difficult batsman to shunt when once set. Austin, an Adelaide player, batted well for his runs, His sniolis to leg being very effective. Why he bowls it is hard to Bay as his style is vary uiiich' ;li it; of a thrower. He is a good field at point. Neither Elder or Owen did much. 0. Perry made his ruus by capital play, and if he could only get practise would soon be in form again, Webb is a good bat. and can hit bard. The Masterton players were completely " stuck up " by Joplin's tricky bowling. Its simplicity proved their downfall. Norman Owen played for Masterton, and kept wickets in grand style. . I practised a little with him lust summer, and he showed good form then, The' Committee should have selected him for tho match against the Bush team. Messrs Maunsell, Elder, and Owen kindly supplied refreshments during the afternoon.
