ELECTION PETITION.

Jackson Palmer ut /?. Monk.

Auckland, Tuesday. The hearing of Mr Jackson Palmer's petition to unseat Mr RMonk, member for Waitema'ta, began yesterday. Mrs Eliza Clements deposed that young Monk gave her 2b. 6d, and at the hotel stood drinks for a large number of voters, later on he gave her a further sum, and also a oigar. Witness would not reply to a question asking whether she had not beeu convicted. 99' times for drunkenness, larceny, and vagrancy, John Olemeuts said Monk junior treated him and Byan who were employed by Henderson at the hoy, Monk junior gave him two (hillings to booze up two men if the; voted for his 'father, Maria Drummond confirmed the evidence of Mrs Clements, she admitted being convicted of drunkenness and vagrancy, but would not say how many times, H. Lyons, gumdiggor, said he saw young Monk treating Borne people. The case was adjourned until to-day. Later, At tbo Waitemata petition case today, Elizabeth Kavanagh deposed that she wns in the'bar of the hotel the whole day of the election, and Monk, junior, paid for drinks for Hyram Lyons, James Donnelly, Eliza Clements, Maria Dnunmond and Sam Johnston several times, Byan showed her two shillings which he said young Monk gave him, and Clements showed her half a crown, which she also said Monk had given her.
