DEATH OF MR CARMAN.
Killed by Lightning.
We very much regret to have to record the sudden death of Mr D. Carman, one of the largest and most respected farmers in this distriot. It appears that Mr Carman and his son were engaged covering a sfcaok, at his Taratahi property when the storm | of yesterday afternoon came on, and apprehending no danger, work was continued until a vivid lash of! lightning striking the stack, affected young Carman, who wasrendered unconscious, On regaining bis senses he looked round for his father and discovered him lying dead on the ground. The electrio fluid must have struck the unfortunate man right on the top of the head, bis hat being torn to ribbons, Dr Johnston, of Carterton, was csiled, but his services were of no avail.
,A'fow years ago when.Mr A, Gockburn gave up his large farm at Manaia, in order to reside in Canterbury, Mr D. Garman became his successor. During the time he has been amongst us he has been regarded as an enterprising and progressive farmer who took a keen interest in every movement for the advancement of agriculture. He was a prominent promoter of the New Zealand Dairy Farmers' Union, but being of very reserved and retiring nature, took little part in local institutions or societies. He was, nevertheless, of a most generous and kindly nature, and in a quiet, unassuming manner, assisted many a good cause, and his untimely end will be sincerely mourned by his many true friends. The deceased leaves a widow and family of three sons and Beven daughters, with whom great sympathy is felt in their sore bereavement.
