THE PREMIER IN THE FORTYMILE BUSH.
With the Burns' Club at Pdhktua.
V The Premier with his private secretary, and Mr Hogg, M.H.8., were' driven by Mr Eli Smith, Oounty representative, on Thursday over a considerable portion of the district to the east of Eketahuna, They visited Premier, being „ of the Grown, to Niflpß settlement, bad a hearty reception from Mr Sinclair George and his fellow lettlers. Afterwards tbey proceeded along tbe Tawataia, Mingaone, and Uawora Valleys, finally *j^ a ß between five and six o'cloolt,. In the evening they were present as the gueßts of the Burns' Club, at the poet's anniver' tary celebration in the Publio Hall. Mr Bogle, Pieiidrnt of the Club, presided. The catering on the part of Mr and Mrs Sullivuu was excellent, and the toast list was well chosen, varied, and interesting, Among tho •guOßti wqb MrO, Haii, M.B.R. for Woodrille. Mr Hogg, in proposing "The Memory of Burns" quoted freely from the works of the poet, who heoharaoterisedssnoordinarynational bard, but on;i whose sturdy independence and el ration above caste,oreed, and country, distinguished him as one of the most remarkable u.en that the world ever pioduced. Tho toast was drunk in silence, but the others were accorded musical honors. Among the speakers who ably responded were the Premier, Mr Hall, M.H.K., the Mayor (Mr G. H, Smith), Messrs Bogle, A. Yale, A. Birnie, Kemper, Haggen, Baillii, Clark, etc, The Premier eleotrified all hands by singing two of Burns' favorite songs with a broad Scotch accent, and Mr. Hogg, M.H.R,, gave the " Barrin o' 'oor door," and " Robin Tamson's Btniddy" with such gusto that a portion of the audience left their seatß ind danoed to the ohorus. Among the singers and reciters were Messrs
Walter Morrison, Milne, Turnbull,
and Skinner. After keeping up the mutio and mirth to the " wee ema' hours ajont the twal," the Premier and his pjsjy drove through to Eketahuna in - the grey dawn and caught the early train for Wellington,
