ESTATE OF J. BARNARD.

Meeting of Creditors,

A meeting of creditors in the estate of Joseph Barnard, contractor, late of Greytown, was held in tho B.M. Courthouse, Greytown, yesterday morning, Mr W. B. Ohonnella, D.0.A., presiding.

The creditors present were Mossis B. A. Wakelin, 18 7d, 0. J, Beard £lO7 10s, Jno. Udy £7O lis, J, Dockery £22 6s, Jas, Baillie £2l IDs Od, J. Maguire (wages) £l7, W. F. Roydhouse i'l2l9s Gd, W. H. Thomas (wages) £G 10s, and 0, Oaut (wages) £sl4s, Mr 11, Stratton Izard appeared for the creditors, and Mr R. Ward Tate for the P.I. and L ; Association of Wairarnpa, to wbicb £19112s 6d is due on mortgage, and for Mr F. W. Qowing, second mortgagor, to extent of £l5O, The total proved liabilities, including mortgages are £785 16s 4d. The Assignee said tbat the debtor bad quitted tlio Colony without tearing any statement. Me understood that preferential payments had been made, and wished to test the feeling of the meeting, us to whsthera refund should be asked or no;. Ho would be glad to receive any information regarding the property of the debtor,

Mr Izard said there was the Palace Hall, on which there were two mortgages. The other assets known were piano, which would sell for about £2O, skates and sundries, worth about £SO. Mr Wakelin thought that the Hall should be offered for sale by public auction or tender. The Assignee suggested that perhaps a company could bo formed to take it over. Mr Wakelin would ask the Official Assignee to use every effort in ascertaining how the dilay was caused in sending the warrant for Barnard's arrest to Auckland. Mr Beard asked what had b.en dona with the takings from the Hall since Barnard had left. Mr Tate understood that the P.I. and L. ABBOoiation had been looking after it and would no doubt give a satisfactory account of the takings. The Assignee suggested that the Hall should be disposed of at an early date,

Mr, Wakelin thought that the: creditors should not tike less than £SOO for it. . ; Mr Izard mentioned that there was a cash asset of £3 due by tho Horticultural Sooiety to Barnard. Mr Wakelin moved dental expenses in Barnard bankrupt be estate and Mr Baillie secondeo^^ Mr Beard supported the motion and said that if all the officials had been as active as Mr Wakelin, Barnard would not have got away. On being put to the meeting the motion was carried unanimously. At this stage Mr Geo. Wyett, Manager P.I. and. L, Association, arrived, and stated that mEooiotj's mortgage was £350, from December, 1888, and there was now due £lOl 12s 6d. The insurance was £2OO. Mr Wakelin moved "That teudeiS be called for the disposal of ihe Hall as soon as possible, and that the Assignee realize on the piano, etc,, ami call another meeting when tenders are received."

The Assignee said he would arrange with the P.I. and L.A. as to looking after the Hall in the meantime,

Considerable discussion took placfl regarding the refund of the preferential payments, aud it was ultimately decided that the Official Assignee obtain legal information on the subject, and submit it at the next, meeting of creditors. No other business being forthcoming the meeting adjourned.
