Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878.] WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 13, 1893.

When we read yesterday that Mr Hogg, M.H.K., bud convened a meeting of Government supporters on a certain question, and that these supporters bad responded 10 his call, we begun to dimly realise that the member for Masterton is becoming a power in the Legislature, a leader amongst members, We remember, oncß upon a time, feeling somewhat sick at the idea of Mr Hogg going down to the House as a representative, but we have got over this feeling, and are now prepared to combat the throes that miiy accompany his further rise and promotion. Wbon he was elected three years ego, he was not our best man—no one thought this-but he was one of our Bhrewdest und cleverest residents. The shrewdness and determination which placed him in Parliament is now giving him a kding position there, The House and the Bpeaker thereof may try collectively or individually to sit on the member for Maeterton, but without avail. He is always bobbing up serenely with a clear ides of whut he is going to do or say, and a persistence which is simply irresistible. Does he mean to succeed Mr Seddon at Premier ? He may have some such intention, and if he has we should rather be disposed to back his chance, Hot that we are an admirer of his political principles, or regard him as other than a political fortune banter, ffe give him credit for his cleverness and pluck, and for the indefatigable manner in which he tries to keep his grip on the electorate, It is coming now to be recognised that it will take a Btrong man to teat him, and we shrill be glad fo see a strong man come forward to contest the election. A weak one will be badly beaten, and we do hope at least to see a olose contest, The curtain is about to fall on the parliamentary stage, when the Government are busy letting off fireworks to dazzle the country, and in this operation tb9y are being ably assisted by Mr .Hogg. The Government have played their cards so well this session that we might almost, expect to see them carry the general elections, However, there is now ft new hope of rescue in the shape of women voters, We do not take it for granted that the position of the Ministry, will be strength- ! ened by the general election. With i efficient organisation the Opposition ; may Win,. nay ' must win; but if! organised efforts fail, then the politi- '< cal adventurers will coino trooping ' back to Wellington, and the Hoggs oi the colony will be its Kings, Will the ..women voters save the colony from this fate ?
