The clause passed without other amendments, The House continued on the amendment inserted providing for a hilf holiday being given to persons employed in hotel bais, and also that shop-keepers at ports could supply after hours, with provisions that any ship leaving within twelve hours required The period of notice required for alteration of day for half holiday was reduced to seven day. In the Alcoholic Liquors Bill an amendment, providing that Resident Magistrates instead of licensingcommitteas should administer the law, was carried by 17 to 15. The Attorney-General said that this affected tho principle of the Bill, and therefore progress to reported. The amendment renders the Bill useless. Tho Shop and and Shop Assistants Bill was stonewalled last night in the Houao ol Representatives. THE LIQUOR BILL The Ronlyn Gospel Temperance Union have petitioned tho Legislative Council, representing that the licensing diatricta fixed in the Alcoholio Liquor Sale Control bill are too large to be workable; that licensing committees are deprived of their discretionary powor, and that the provision for a threa-firtbs majority is opposed to the principle that majorities should rul6. They also object to the provisions rendering it necessary thathalf the people on tho roll must vote, and granting a two years' renowal of licenie.

Tho Licensed Victuallers' Association of Ashburton ask that women shall not exeroiso the franobiss under the Bill for at least five years. THIS PARLIAMENTARY LIBRARY.
