TENUI NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) •b __
On Friday a very successful sale of work was held in the Tenui Hall, whiok was well decovated with evergreens, holly, and flowers, by the Sewing Bee in aid of the funds of that building. Mr E. Maunsell opened the proceedings with ut neat speech. He expressed pleasure in seeing so many ladies present, and highly praised the members of the Sewing Bee for their kindness in coming to the rescue when the funds of the hall were at such a low ebb, augmenting, In 1888 the Committee of the hall, of which he was a trustee, decided to enlarge the building,as they found it inadequate to meet the grow* ing demands of the residents, -who held more conceits, dances, and other entertainments than formerly. To meet the expense a sum of £IOO was borrowed, and in spite ot all efforts to pay it off, thafc amount was still owing. The ladiesof Tenui had ealla'fffljfrime to the rescue by Bee for the purpose of asffihg the residents to reduce it, and the result of their - labours could be seen on tho stalls, which he hoped would soon be emptied, and buyers and sellers satisfied, Mesdames Owen, Speedy and Armer had charge of the fancy work and general stall and Mesdames Speedy and Stilborn served at the refreshment bar, The articles for disposal showed more than the average ability of needlework, and were of a very serviceable kind. In the evening the hall was cleared and dancing was kept up until an early hour. The proceedings were enlivened by selections of vocal and instrumental music The Committee, exceedingly well assisted by Miss Stilborn, Hon. Sec, deserve every congratulation for the admirable way in whioh arrangements were made to secure the enjoyments of all. tt was a pleasure to see so many of tho residents ot both sexes present, and it shows jriiai Tenui can do when occasion requifS, '.he proceeds of the sale, etc,, amounted to L 45 and after expenses am paid there will be a substantial balance to hand over to tho trustees.
