FOOTBALL.
[ByDamooleb.] > ' Stars o. Greytown, Saturday afternoon turned out another miserable football day, and all hopes of Beeiog a brilliant exposition of the'game,as was.fully expected if the weather had been fino, were blaatcdr; Grey town sent up a; very strong junior' team, and were ap- ; parently confident of viotory, They were certainly the all who saw the teams and the grounder their ■ heavier 1 men were expected to carry everything before them. Not 'so, however, as the result proved in the SUr's favor by one try (2 points) to love. The ground was in a wretched state, but notwithstanding; this a fairly fast and: even game resulted. Rain came down in torrents throughout the afternoon, and the trees around the Oval were the favoured spots for the interested spjjflijp. No Bcorowas made in the and tho'_ game had every appearance of ending in a like manner, until one of the Dorset's, after repeated onslaughts, and the hardest of luckf managed to drop-on the ball at the right moment,: tho result of following up a fast open rush. Wrigley made a good attempt at goal, but failed to convert. Greytown were superior in their play on the line out, and often were within an ace of scoring, but the defence of tho Starhaoks, their skipper in particular, proved excellent,' and they gotskilfully out of somevery tight places. The winners, although thfi/'hadnot much the best of the gamo, faith, fully earned their victory, and all played a plucky and determined game. Cargill, in the first spell particularly, was seen to splendid advantage, and proved a tower of strength' to his side. Galloway and Jackson were also good, running and kicking with great judgment, and . King, although light, gavo his baoksßyery available opportunity. Wellington was not suob a success as usual,-and seemed inclined lo rim too much, Wrigley, Westbrook andJPike, in the - ; forwards, worked hard and fast, although as a whole they missed the services of Pearse, aDd had nc one to hold them together. The Dorsets were all there in the following-up portion of the game, but ,w'efe, inclined on Saturday to wait for shows, and not do their fair share in ibe sorums. JinowleS, Brunton and Welsh Were the best baok3 for Grey town, whilst Udy, JJockery, and Maguire were among the conspicuous ones in the fovwards, ,Mr Tom Hawko officiated with the whistlr-, and Messrs Maguire and Brunton lioe umpires. The'game was played with the utmost good feeling, and rough-play was conspicuous by its absence.
Our Rep. Team. Wairarapa will be represented by the following bam against Wanganui, on Tuesday, 22nd:-Baok, D'Aroy ; three-quarters, B.Thompson, Hudson, De Joux; halves, Hansen, Maguire; forwards, Morris, Watson (wings), T, Welch, E. Ddj, Gray, W. Day, G. Welch, Iggnlden, MoKillop. Emergencies, back, Wrigley; forwards, A. Welch, Astall. The team is composed of seven Red Stars, six Masterton, and two Greytown, and is a fairly good-one, but far from the best that could be ohosen, Oreytown, for instanoe, who have beaten Masterton, and arequfae ecjual to the Gtarsiß only representeTtSyW men, A good opportunity has been given for players to shoVF their form, and has not been taken advantage of, Greytown particularly being unre> presented at"rep."practices, Tho Selection Committee have done their duty well, arid under tho oireum* stances would have been perfectly right had tbey omitted the others who considered their reputation good, enough for a place. Although this would undoubtedly weaken the team, it would show independence, and giveplayers who take every opportunity of rolling up, some cnoonragement. However, the team has been chosen, and I hope to see them victorious on Tuesday. The backs are a reliable lot, and if it is a fine day will make things very merry for their opponents, Thompson is the, only one taken exception tn, but if he is well looked after by Hansen and Maguire, he will hot belie his position. In my opinion the halves are exceptionally strong, and the wing players should take care not to interfere with their play. They are botu new rep. men, but' by brilliant play this season have earned tbeir place, The forwards are a good, strong crosd, and fast enough for anything. The only new blood in this division is MoKillop, and-s&n-siderable surprise was manifested at his inclusion. He is a young player of great promise, plays ibe game in real earnest, and lasts to the finish. Disappointments have, of course.bcen caused, and I could name half a dozen who are quite equal to those chosen, but to please everyone would be a dittloult thing indeed, and the fifteen is strong enough. The team will play in black jerseys, the colours lof the winners of the W.R.F.U.'a Banner for the season, Pearson's Band will probably play on tho match on Tuesday, and as it will probably be the only " rep " match we may see this season, I expect to see a very large number 'otjpectators, A smoke concert, VHlJpjiuf the visitors will be held in {Helm, ing,
According to a writer in the Post, on the return trip of" our boyß," Mr " Off-side MoKenzie" ,was presented on board the Wakatipu with a large cake, as the possessor of the best all* round appotite" of thetoor. The long Wairarapian pocketed the sarcasm, and consoled himself with hopes ot consuming the cake in the privacy of his oabin, but before be could do so, it was secreted by one of bis comrades, and is now on exhibition, suitably inscribed, in a W el% lingtoaahop window.
