MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Ordinary Meeting. . ' The usual fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council took place last evoning, Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Heron, Dixon, Miitrie, Yates, Oullen, Feist, E. E, Chamberlain and W.< Perry, MiNUTESi The minutes of the ''jUfeeeting were read and con6rmed.^^ COBRE3PONDENOE was received from William Bell, asking that the name of R. F. Temple be entered on the Borough Roll, From W. Whitt, asking to have his name inserted on the Borough 8011. From the Masterton Town Lands Trust, drawing attention to the encroachment of the Waipoua 'River on the Trust's property, and asking thai the Council obtain an Engineer's report on protection work, . From the Pahiatua Borough Coun« cil, signifying willingness to accept any candidate for the United Charitable Aid Board, selected by the Council. From the Premier's office, stating that the question of amending the Rating Aot to enable local bodies to rate on the unimproved value of land Would recoive consideration. From E. S. Richards, asking the Council to subsidise the amount paid to him as Poundkeeper fof*r# -Mmterton Borough. From J. 0. Ingram, applying for an increase of FromD Walton and 8. J. Russell, drawing attention to the injury to their properties through the blocking of water by the absence of a culvert in the formation of Chapel street. ' RESOLUTIONS, It was moved by Or Oullen and seconded by Or Mulrie that Mr R. Hare be asked to represent Masterton on the United Charitable Aid Board.—Carried. It was decided to take.no action with respect to observing Arbor Day or planting trees in the Borough. The applications of R, F. Temple and Willbm Whitt to have their names placid ou the Borough Roll were grantid. It was also resolved, on the motion of tho Mayor, that proper application forms be printed and that the Town, Cleik take proper steps to asoertain the hnajides of all applications from persons wishing to have their names inserted on the Burgess roll, A committee was appointed, con. sisting of Crs Feist and Dixon to report on the advisability or otherwise of procuring a type-writing machine for the Town Clerk's office.. The application of Messrs Walton and Russell re culvert in Chapel street, was referred to the Works Committee with power to act.

Cr Feist moved and Or Gallon seconded that tho other local bodies be asked to • co-operatewiUith o * Borough Council in therifNMNMbventing tho. encroachment of the Waipoua River, and to share the cost of nu Engineer's report on the matter. —Carried. Dr S. P, Beard reported three oases of measles within tho Borough, Another caso was also leported. The Mayor thought they ought to take Borne action to sco that theso oases were kept as isolated as possible,

Measles, when caught by adults, was a moro Burious complaint than commonly supposed. It would be as well to write to the persons whose children were Buffering, to ask them to take all precautions to prevent the spread of the complaint. The Building Suryeyor reported breaches of the building by-law, in two instances. It was decided that notice be sent to tbo offenders, pointing out the breaches complained of. The Fire Brigade Committee reported that it had not been considered advisable to move the Firo Brigade Buildings to the new site, pending further negotiations with the Town Lands Trustees for a larger piece of -land.-The report was adopted.

The report of the Inspector of Nuisances regarding tlio romfggiJfa. night-soil, and the flushing VW&fßfr town creok was read. It was resolyed that the report be amended to read, that the provisions of the by-law relating to the removal of uigbt-soil bo strictly carried out, The Council then went into Committee to consider the appointment of a Borough carter and fire engine keeper. It was decided to appoint Edward G. Braggins, and it was arranged to start him on ordinary Borough work for the'present. It was decided not to call tenders for the Borough cartage, pending tho permanent arrangements for carting, The applications.for increases of salary were left over until next meeting. It was decided JALconsider the annual balance special meeting to be held after the next ordinary meeting. Cr Feist brought under the notice of the Council the fact that a street named York Street, at Kuripuni, waß fenced across, and certain residents desired it to be opened up. It vas resolved to take steps to open up the street. DRAIJMOE, _ Or Cullen moved themotion standing in his name, that an Engineer be appointed to ascertain the cost of a drainage scheme for the Borough. Speaking on tho subjeot he thought

Or Dixon was of opinion that a water Bcheme and a drainage schema must be worked together, The Mayor said this was his opinion and as Mr King's report was not yet to hand, he would move tbatthequestipns of drainage and ,a water supply be left over for a special meeting to' be held on Tuesday, next at 7.80 p,m, . Or Gallon seconded, and the motion was carried. ; , ACCOUNTS,/ Accounts were passed for payment as submitted to the meeting, after which Cr Cullen moved the Council's adjournment! " '
