MASTERTON BOROUGH LICENSING COMMITTEE.

| Annual Meeting. ' The annual meeting of the Masterton Borough Licensing Committee, was held at noon to-day. PresentMessrs G. Heron, (Chairman), J. Williams, W. l'crry, J, Hessey and T, E. The latter was frequented by spielers and hitiVts, A copy of notice that the Police would oppose the license was put, in, and also a notice ofintention to oppose tho granting of a license to Elizabeth Jane Low, for the Star Hotel, on the ' grounds that the House is not re-, quired and also that it is situated in the immediate vicinity of a place of public worship, ' The police report of tho conduct of the Star Hotel during tho past year, ' was also very unfavourable, and stated that the law was set at de--1 fiance, and the house made the resort of bad characters. 1 Renewals of license were granted to Henry Phillips (Occidental Hotel); 1 T. D. Thompson (Empire Hotel;; A. A, Elkins (Club Hotel); and Agnes Thompson (Prince of Wales 1 Hotel) without comment, the hour oE 1 closing to be ten o'clock in each case. A wholesale license was also granted to the Wairarapa Farmors' Co-Opera--1 tive Association. The application of J. 0. Eastwood for a transfer of license from himself 1 to Harry Richard Low was next dealt with. [ Mr Beard appeared for the objectors, Mr 0. A. Pownall, on behalf of the ' applicant, said that the objectors must appear in person. They could not be represented by counsel. | Tho Chairman suggested tho waiying of objections until tho question of tho new license, Mr Beard could not agree to this, 1 as it would place the licensee in a false 1 position when applying for the new license. Mr Pownall asked the Bench to : rule as to the question of Mr Beard representing the objectors to the 1 license. 1 The Rev Robt, Wood said he was an objector, and by permission of the 1 Bsnch, he was represented by Mr [ Beard. The Chairman said that if Mr Wood would go into the box, they would hear his objection. After some further argument Mr Wood went into the box, ' The Chairman said the Bench : ruled that objectors must appear per--1 sonally. Mr Beard pointed out that according to the act the application for all new licenses should lake precedence. 1 The Eev.
