"The Mikado," Last evening the popular and : Bpeotacular Japanese opera "The ' Mikado" (oneol Gilbert and Sul- . livan's best) was staged in the Mas- i terton Theatre Koyal before a large '■ and appreciative audience, The charming melodies and innocent yet subtle humours of the opera, were rendered in a very intelligent manner. The mounting vtaa complete and the costumes and accessories were in good ; taste. The part of the Mikado was well pourtrayed by Master (Juealy, who deserves special mention for his . conception of the character, Nankipoo could scarcely have been placed in ' better hands than that of Miss Marion '< Mitchell, whose singing and acting were very pleasing. Master W, Percy , as Pooh Bah appeared to have caught tbe spirit of the part and the intention of the auihor's oreatiou particu . larly well. The role of Ko-Ko—-"Lord High Executioner"—was filled to perfection by Master Alf, Stephens, who by his clever acting caused a considerable amount of amusement, t "Three little Maids "—(wards of Ko«Ko) as interpreted by Miss Lily Everet,(Yum-Yum) MissL, Stephens, (Pitti-Smg) Miss N. Wilson, (Peep-Bo) —was fully appreciated by the audience" The difficult and somewhat thankless f part of" Eatisha" the " Mikado's" , daughter-in-law (elect) was exceed- I ibgly well rendered by Mias H. Bussell, while Master G. Young sustained r the character of Pish-Tuah with oredit, The subsidary characters were ; well filled and the choruses were suDg with a spirit that would do credit to - older companies. The encores were numerous, and the applause of,the audience unstinted,, the opera altogether being thoroughly enjoyable, To-night, the last of the season, "Tbe Gondoliers" will be staged, when there is certain to be a crowded house , to hear what is generally considered f the finest music eyer written by the authors of these popular operas. I
