THE UNEMPLOYED.
(By Telegraph,—Press Association.) CiimsTcnt'Boii, May 80. The Mayor waited upon the Minister for Education to-day, on behalf of a number of men out of work, He said he believed there were now 200 men on the books of the Labour Bureau, many of whom were married and had families to support, Thoy asked that something should be at once done to find work for them, The Hon, Mr Reeves said that on learning that so many men were in want of work he at once sent an urgent telegram to the Premier, ■ He might mention that the bureau was not intended for making work, but for seeing that moil were sent lo places where works were going on. He had sent for MrLomas, the local agent, and the men would be tabulated and Bent to the works most suitable to their various conditions as soon as employment could bo found for them. Tho Government wasmaking arrangements by whioh more men could be sent to Cheviot, but these would be i married men, who would, of course, 1 have the preference over those with f no one depending on them. It was ' quite likely some work would also be 1 found in the Norlli Island. ' Tho Mayor made reference to tho 1 fact that when men tiuished their B work in the country distriots they in- " variably made for tho city, and as * there waa not much doing in the country at the present time, this helped to swell the number on the 1 books of the Bureau. Mr Reeves said this bad always been the case in New Zealand, and a travelling population had become one of the institutions of the colony. He considered that local bodies should do something towards finding work, especially for elderly men, He thoughtit was scarcely fair to throw upon the ) Government the whole onus of finding work. .
