The Chairman, in a few well-chosen , remarks, thanked the ladies in the district for their generosity in catering for the children attending the school | treat, and Mr Nicliolla and Mr Lawson, the obliging manager of the W.J.C.A. store at Tinui, for their kindness in lending the brakes which 1 conveyed the children to the 'Whaka* ; taki school treat. He referred to the good work done by the master daring the short time he had been in charge, and pointed out the necessity of parents sending their children regularly to school, if they wished to take advantage of the liberal education provided by tho State for all classes of the community, for reasons best known to himself, MrCollerton would not allow bis children to receive the prizes awarded to them. I have heard some opprobrious remarks about tho matter, but think he should know his own mind better than others. I have noticed that mora heart-barnings are caused by the distribution of prises than anything el Be connected with a country school. To avoid discontentment, I suggest that instead of giving the books to the children, they should be utilised to form a school library. The pupils would then be able to pernio all the volumes, instead of only the one they receive. At the meeting of householders for the election of the School Committee, great interest was taken in tho proceedings. Mr Bellis was in the chair, and Mr Hancock, Chairman of the old Committee, read the report for the year, showing what his colleagues had idonc. They bad worked well and harmoniously together, and bad succeeded, through a petition, in inducing the Education Board to take steps to thoroughly renovate the teacher's residence. They expressed great satisfaction with the work the master had dose in raising the tone of the school, and tho number on the roll, wkich wis 85 when bo took charge, bad steadily riaon to 61. Considering the long distance some of the scholars bad to come and the stats of the reads jrftw.ttwh the' attendance bad bfe&n very good.
