The atraia of holding the highest political position in New Zealand seems to bo unendurable! Before twelve months have passed since the death of Sir Harry Atkinson, bis successor, Mr Bsllance, shares bis sad fate. Men placed in a post of each heavy responsibility should be free from tbe thousand petty cares and worries vrhicb osaally beset them, Tbe more popular and genial a Premier may be, the more he is harassed by th« importunities of it host of friends, and a myriad of followers. Mr Ballance was a man of such a kindly disposition tbat he denied himself to none of those, whether great or small, who sought a favour at bis hands or had a grievance to lay before him. 6Fe sacrificed health and strength, mixing amongst bis fellow men when be could Hi stand the strain of necessary parliamentary and cabinet work. He was eve; anxious to fulfil every duty aod obligation imposed Upon him by his prominent office, and as Sir Harry Atkinson broke down, so he broke down, and so will any successor in hia place break down. Mentally the late &r Ballance was a bright strong man. Twenty years ago we used to read his lucid leaders in the Wenganui Herald with admiration. Before then ha had made his mark in Provincial politics, and when tbe Provinces went by tbe board he began to assume a prominent position in tbe General Assembly. He was a man who literally had no personal entimie*. His kindly conciliatory manner, his meatal ability and the clearness and facility with which he expressed his ideas mads him a most useful member of tbe party to which he was I attached,; and when, three years ago that party cams into power bis claim to take the first position was never questioned. Prom the foot of tbe ladder to the top rung he olimbod step "by step by bit own ability, by bin industry, and by hia trustworthiness. His political views were never our views, but we are free to admit that he himself was true to his own convictions, and lived to give effect to i many of those advanced idem, which in former years nese regarded ar V dangerous or itsprabtieable. Amongst his own party he wasjuatly held in tbs moat erithaskalio esteem. Bj/'hia' fAtitidki opponents be was ever/ treated,: with respect, and hts ijiany high qualities were fully xißsofe. ftised,; The time for faming'a dit* passionate opinion of his political career has not yet arrived. ;H&has brought great changes about ia 3Sew Zealand which, if a trait, will ba foriha
