: ■ A-welcome tea and social \m given to; tbo Rev, S, J. Gibson (whosap, cecds. the Rov. W. Ruwse in tins Greytown circuit) last evening. ' A large number of. person?, chiefly adults, were present, Carterton ■ was especially well represented, fully half coming from that townehip, An excellent spread was prepared in the schoolroom, and the visitors were most efficiently waited upon by the ladies,' • At about eight o'clock the eocial commenced, the Rev, W, Bowse occupying the chair, and the Revs. .Gibson,: Murray and Dukes .tbe platform. An apology was read from tbe Rev. T. 15. McLean for his absence.: A few remarks appropriate to the.ocoasion were made by the Revs, .Ro.wse,' Murray, and Dukes, to which tho. Rev. S. J. Gibson suitably re« sponded. The Groytown choirrendored several.authems in a very praiseworthy manner, tbo voices being particularly well blended, Welcomes were given to. Mr Gibson by MrH. Callister, of Carterton, on behalf of tho quarterly meoting, and Mr McGregor on behalf of Featherston. '
Yotes of thanks were carried with great acclamation as under Moved by Mr. McGregor: To tho ladies who had so generously provided the provisions (especially Cartnrtonians), By Rev. S. J. Gibson;. To tho chair, and to the Rev, Dukes for his attendance, By Mr T, J. Rowso: To the Organist (Mrs H. Hawke) for her valuable assistance in that sphere. During his remarks, the Rev. Dukes spoke very strongly against the "Missing Word" competitions, condemning them as a means of public gambling,;
