The meeting of the Mastcrton Borough Council on Tuesday last was unusually interesting, although the debate on tho water question was not very edifying. Certain councillors oppeared to bo inoculated with hydrophobic prejudices whioh they cannot throw off. Tho best water supply is [undoubtedly one from the Wai'ngawa, but if a less expensive one is to be adopted, tbo second best is the Lane, downe reservoir. If councillors (?ho objected to the Lansdowne proposal would elect to adopt a Waingawa project, wo should credit them with an evident intention to do their duty by the town. Instead of ridiculing the Lansdowne project they should at least have assisted by discussion to elicit the real points on which it Bhould be decided, We gather frem the meeting that it would cost £ISOO, but not a word is said as to the revenue it would produce. Will it yield £IOO per annum for irrigation purposes alone ? We believe it would, but this is a point on which the Council should have given definite information. It has not done justioe to the project in the debate whioh m recorded in our last issue, and by not entering more thoroughly into its merits an injustice is done to the public, Turning to another subject, it is gratifying to notice- that'the Council did not support tbe Mayor in bis unwise proposal to levy blackmail on the ratepayers in order to cheapen gaa to consumers. Though wodisagroe with His Worship on this point, we approve of his ideas on the subject of BSBH^H^^HH^Bne wUUBBttBUttSG&i 6 ' BeecißtobetopUaeeratepayerßbykcep-
ing down thoratesand retarding necessary improvements, Ts the grass to grow in Masterton streets while other contres of population of less importance are forging ahrad. It seems bat the other day that Masterton was more populous and more prosperous than Palmeratou, now it is a long way behind it. Masterton may boast that its debts are lighter and its rates easier than Pulmerßton's, but still tbo latter town is a more desirable place of residence, does a larger trade, and is more enterprising. Masterton is dreadfully slow. It is fifteen years since our Borough Council took the question of.drainage into serious consideration. We fear that it takes our municipal authorities at least twonty-fi?e years to make a necessary progressive step in. this town.
