GREYTOWN BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Monthly Meeting,

The usual monthly meeting of tho above Council was held at the Council Chambers last evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (F, H, Wood, Esq.), Crs Bright, lngley, Koinpton, jW. Day, 11. McMaster, D. Cameron, jtinr,, and C. J, Beard, Tho Works Committee reported that two tenders had been received for metalling in Wood, Humphries, and East streets,—The Council, considering that tho tenders were too high, resolved to get an estimate from the Overseer for doing tho pork by day labour.

The Financo Committee reported an overdraft of £691,

Accounts for wages, etc, to the amount of £Bl nero passed for payment,

The Borough Solicitor (Mr K, Ward Tate) waited on the Council re the loan of £6OO, which had been applied for in tho N. Z. Government Insurance Office, and oiplained that a farlherhitch had ooourredin reference to providing the sinking fund as the Permanent Investment and Loan Association of Wairarupa was objected to as a medium for same, and it was insisted that the deposits be made through the Public Trust Office, This course would involve considerable loss of interest to the Council, -Mr Tait explained that Mr Treadffell.of Moasra Buckley,Stafford & Trendwill informed him that Mr Wakelin (ex-Mayor) had agreed to this course,—The Council saw that there was no help for it, so iustructod Mr T»to to complete matters on these terms,

A letter was read from Mr H. S. Izard, aoting as solicitor for Mr Coleman Phillips, domanding payment of £BO as damages for an injury sustained by bis horse, ridden by Mr Ohaßj. Kent-Johnston, through the breaking of a plank in the bridge known as' Maxton's bridgo' in Main street. mitteo (Mr Reynolds) said that Fitz-hetbert-streot needed metalling from (he Bank of New Zealand to the Bank of Australasia.—Mr Beal drew the attention to the street corner at Mr O'iSeale's shop, which had been damaged by tho flood.—Mr Donald said the watertables needed oleaning near Mr Bnrt's mill, and,a strong culvert was needed, Ihore were also several other small jobs that required looking to. ■ ■ Mr Reynolds requested that all the matters be left for bim to see to. He bad been Chairman of the Board for six or eight years, and had been oleoted Chairman of the Works Oommitteeoftho present Board, and bo thought he should know how to oarry out tho duties of his office, Mr Donald said it wbb his opinion that tho Chairman of tho Works Committee should not be interfered with.

Mr Beale said tho Chairman should carry out the instructions of tho committee, and it was the duty of tho members to inform bim of anything that waßnotacoording to instructions. An animated discussion took place, in which Mr Beale remarked that when he spoke to Mr Reynolds about anything, that gentleman acted " like a bear with a sore head." Mr Beal asked that the water tables from Mr Burt's corner to Mr Benton's be cleaned out, Mr Hodder said,he would like to know when anything at all was to be done nt tho lower end of the town, it seemed to him that most of the rates were Bpent at the top end of the town.

Mr Donald gave notice of motion that the rate for tho ensuing year be Struck at -Jd. Mr Hndder gave notice that the rate be Jd as previously.

It was resolved on the motion of Mr Reynolds, seconded by Mr Hodder that the Treasurer range for ft hank overdraft of £l5O for tlireo months. It wbb resolved, on the motion of Mr Donald, seconded by Mr Beal that Application be made to the proper authorities for subsidies duo from March 81st,'1890. It was rcßolvcd on the motion of Mr Reynolds, that tho streets be open for grazing for another month. The Chairman said ho wished it thoroughly understood that all cattle must boin before the next meeting of the Board.
