The Works and Finance Committee of the" Masterton Borough Council met last evening. Present: Crs Heron (chairman), Hessey, E, E, Chamberlain, Jlutrie, and Cullon. Tho Overseer's report was received anil recommended for adoption, A discussion regarding the proposed purchase of a horse and dray, for Borough use, took place, The committee recommended that they be empowered to purohase a horse, dray, nnd harness mid make alt necessary arrangements, and that a driver be appointid, his duties to inolude the custodianship and driving of tbo steam lire engine-, at a weekly wage of £2, wet and dry, and a cottage to livo in,
A latter was received from tho Bailway Department offering to lower tho south culvert near tho Miißtertonßailwny Staiior, but not the north one, as tho latter drives a ram to supply water to the station, -The Committee pointed out that this ivmild not be BUtEcient, as tho water is dammed up at the north culvert above its natural level. The Chairman iulormed the Committee that Mr Waddinaton's complaint regarding the overflow of water on to Mr b'reeth's property had been attended to by the Borough Overneor. Tho application of the Benevolent Scoiety for work for tho man Bookman was dealt with and tho Overseer instructed to find him work at stonebreaking.
It was decided to instruct the Overseer to send a man to repair tho bad places in Gladstone Road,
The (Jommitiee decided to inspect High slnet with regard to calling tenders for ro metalling, and also to make a general inspection of the streets of the Borough before next meeting. It was resolved to recommend that Mr I. Allen be notified that unless lio makes satisfactory progress with bis contract at Albert-street north, within seven days, the Overseer will be instructed to do tho work at his" expense, Accounts were recommended for payment amounting to £177 12s lid,
