Whakataki and Castlepoint Races. (Our Speoial Correspondent.) t Tho Whakataki and Castlepoint ' Eaccswere held on tho beach at i ■V Castlepoint on Saturday last, and the •vy Btowards are to bo congratulated on | the successful mooting, Thero were t good fields and good racinp, many of , the horses being very wll ridden, j Unfortunately the morning broke oloudy, and by midday a drizzling , rain began to fall, which continued at j intervals during tho afternoon, l'ho , attendance, including a number of | ladios, was considerably better than j usual, and all seemed to thoroughly ] enjoy themselves, the utmost good ( humour being manifested during the , whole of the day. Tho duties of ' Judge (iu tho unavoidable absence of , Mr MeHutchon) wero performed by j Mr A. Murray, of Mataikunu, ( whose jkaktoiie wero unquestioned. OnlyiJflWnnoulty presented itself viz, r that of n couple of horses in the Consolation Kikg getting between the. t judge and the En if, whereby ho had ; some difficulty in placing the winner. This matter was placed before the | stewards in the evening, when tho , race was awarded to Rata with Arab second. MrH, Holmes, as starter, succeeded in getting his horses away very satisfactorily. Tho energetic Seen retary (Mr J. 13. Osborne) was untiling in liis efforts to tuake the meeting successful, and so well lias ho succeeded that there is every probability of thero being a satisfactory credit balance to carrr Inward to' next years races. - • Jir Stewart of the 19*Whakataki Hotol had a booth on the ground and did a largo business, while an excellent lunch was procurable at Mr Pull's. The inevitable penciller was there, and sevtral games, include ing a somewhat primitive shooting gallery, Constable Collerton was in attendance, his only duty being to watch or join in the amusement »nd good feeling that prevnded the meeting from start to finish, The lido was rather a late one and it was an hour behind tho appointed time before the first race started and the last race (Forced Handicap) had to be abandoned, The following are tho results Hurdle Race, of 30 sovs, second 1 Bov out of stakes, Ono mile, over four hurdles, height Bft Gin. ■ Minimum weight list. Mr James' Primrose, list (James) 1 Mr G. Horn's Cigarette, list (Smith) 3 Three others ran. Dash and Tom missed the first liurdle and Primrose jumping splendidly got tho lead which ( she maintained hard held to tho finish, | winning by several longthsfrom Tom, | Cigarette a length away third, The | owner of Cigarette entered a protest | against Tom as ho had not negotiated | the first hurdle, The protest was | upheld, and second money awarded | to Cigarette. I HSfopN Plate, of 6 sovs, second 1 , aOB*A out of stakes. One mile. | Tuinimura weight lOst. Mr Stuart's Lady Maud, lOst (Friend) 1 , Mr Bucling's Blue Jacket, list 91b (Mulvay) 2 j Seven others started. Lady Maud , got the worst of the start, but at the , half mile drew away from the horses ( and won easily by two lengths, , Whakataki Cop, of 15 sovs, (open to all comers) second 2 sovs, One , mile and a half. , Mr Mannering's Tauherenikau, , lOat 81b (Smith) 1 \ Mr Smith's The Arab, lOst 81b ; (Day) 2 Four others slarted, An excellent start was effected and Tauherenikau soon took the leading position. The Arab, the best of the others, well up till the half milo was passed. At tho mile turn between two and throe lengths separated the leading horses and this position Tauherenikau kept till the finish, The last half mile was run away out of sight of the hulk of the people but a considerable number journeyed to the winning post, Working Man's Race, ot six sovs, second one sov out of stakes, Three-quarters of a milo, Minimum weight 12st, Mr Newcombe's Flirt (Owner) „, 1 Mr Hißgin's Calliope (Owner) ... 2 Six others started. This was the L best contested race of the day, and jL was won by half a length. Mr NewBR combe, who rode himself, was lustily HA cheered as he came to be weighed, Mgjgkr.i] again as he left the scales. Mediation Handicap, of six sovs, HHbl second ono sov out of stakes, JHw'One' mile. BPir McGun's Rata Ost (Bolt) ... 1 Wr Mr Smith's Tho Arab lOst 81b (Day) 2 Four others started, Tho Arab was left at the post when tho flag fell, and the starter made use of his whip to get him away, at the halfmilo he had passed all the horses except Rata, who had led all the way, after passing the three-quarter mile The Arab was on pretty even terms with the leader, when they passed the winning post the Judge (who was nearly rode over by the Arab and another who had passed between him and the surf) refused to give liia decision till he had consulted with the Stewards, The result was awaited with much interest, as four of the owners claimed the raco, After the Stowardsiagi met the decision was given as iw.
